My wife has been on lamictal for 5 years due to seizures that she began having in 2002. She had a total of 4 seizures in a period of about 3 or 4 months - none before, none after. During that time she tried a few different seizures meds, which did not work, until finally settling on lamictal, which appeared to work.
However, she also began antidepressants less than a year before the seizures started. We are unsure right now which antidepressant she was on, but we remember learning later that the medication had the potential side-effect of causing seizures. She stopped the antidepressants right around the same time the seizures ended. Coincidence?
When the seizures began, she was just beginning college. All of the seizures happened when she was studying for big tests and while she was on her period. We suspect that the stressful environment combined with the antidepressants caused the seizures. Is that plausible?
Lamictal is way too expensive for us to continue if it's unnecessary. Also, we would like to have children in the near future, but are concerned about potential risks involved with taking lamictal during pregnancy.
We are going to get a professional opinion, but we're afraid that no one will recommend stopping lamictal because they don't want to be the one who is at risk (legally or professionally) if she has a relapse.
Would it be prudent to gradually take her off the lamictal? Any advice is welcome.
