I am certain that most MAOI users will find that list absolutely ridiculous. Since "stimulants" and other meds that increase catecholamine or serotonin activity MAY cause a reaction in SOME people, the FDA is required to list all of these medications (even if the VAST majority of these meds are safely combined with MAOIs)

The same goes with the list of restricted food. Since excess tyramine can cause a hypertensive reaction, the safe way of warning the public is to restrict all tyramine containing food. As all MAOI users know, there are actually VERY few foods to avoid.

I think these "comprehensive" lists are more dangerous than the possible interaction. These lists scare people away from a potentially life saving class of medications...Medications that have not only been around for 50+ years, but have also been proven superior to other medications for various psychiatric disorders.

Perhaps a more responsible answer to "what food/medication should be avoided with MAOIs" should be answered HERE, by those (like myself) who have used various MAOIs for many years.
