there's a growing theory that maybe the opiate system plays a big, big role in emotional regulation. Basically, the idea is that while the focus has been on increasing/decreasing/altering neurotransmitter levels, the focus should have been on dealing with enorphins (I think that's the term I'm looking for--other posters will know more).
Opiates were used for 1,000s of years, then ignored, now..they're back. Kind of. I don't think most shrinks would go for Dilaudid, especially if you have been acquiring Dilaudid illegally. Then again: who knows. Some posters here have very liberal, very understanding shrinks, and if you've been non-responsive to meds...maybe it could happen?
More likely, IF your shrink goes the opiate route, you'll be looking at an RX for buprenorphine (I think I misspelled that awfully). Bupe is a painkiller, it can substitute for other opiates (its an "in-office" option for maintenance; its emerging as the new methadone). Usually, there's no euphoria with it: if it works, it gets rid of the anxiety/depression and mellows you out. If it doesn't...back to the drawing board.

There's also Ultram (tramadol), which isn't an option while you're on MAOIs or in withdrawal from them, since the interaction could cause pretty severe serotonin syndrome and kill you.
