Not all SSRI's are antidepressants. I remember reading about a few investiagational serotonin uptake inhibitors that displayed no antidepressant potential.

One study showed that the SSRIs we have increased the activity of an enzyme that produces allopregnanalone (sp.), a potent gabaergic neurosteroid by some 20x.

So, it might not be the serotonin that calming at all, but allopregnanalone.
