you could try a benzo of some dosage level with the stimulant. A mood stabilizer (anticonvulsant or lithium) might also be a good choice (this could be used in addition to the benzo). BuSpar helps some people with ADHD and smooths out stims--some people hate it though.
With Provigil, I don't think its necessarily an either/or choice. If you can't tolerate doses of stims high enough to help out, I imagine you could try adding in Provigil to get more mileage out of your pre-existing meds. I've read about some combos where the patient takes ritalin AND provigil, or an amphetamine AND provigil, possibly plus other things. I imagine that might be helpful. The only real way to know would be to try it--since youre dealing with a stimulant (albeit an aytpical one), I imagine you should know if its helpful or not within a couple of test doses.
