Any experiences with Riluzole/Rilutek?

Posted by psychobot5000 on October 18, 2006, at 18:02:21

Riluzole: first drug currently used for ALS. It's expensive because of its niche market, but some studies suggesting a robust antidepressant effect and anti-OCD properties. Acts on glutamate and other interesting targets.

Any experiences with this med, or other information?

I've copied the following from wikipedia:

Mechanism of action

Riluzole has several actions:

* Sodium channel blockade
* High-voltage calcium channel blockade
* N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA)/glutamate receptor blockade

Riluzole preferentially blocks TTX-S sodium channels, which are associated with damaged neurons. This reduces influx of calcium ions and indirectly prevents stimulation of glutamate receptors. Together with direct glutamate receptor blockade, the effect of the neurotransmitter glutamate on motor neurons is greatly reduced.
