Generic Zoloft has different effect if any

Posted by DanielJ on October 12, 2006, at 8:52:27

I posted a similar item recently but I need to clarify. I bought 100 mg generic Zoloft for my son who has Schiz.. In the past as perscribed, I cut them in half and my son takes one a day = 50 mg as well as 5 mg of Zyprexa. After taking the generic for 2 days, my son began to ramble, speaking constantly about bizarre ideas (not dangerous but ridiculous) he couldn't shut up and we began to realize something wasn't right.
Since the only thing we changed was the Zoloft we decided to bite the bullet and pay the usuall $160.00 price for Brand Zoloft and gave him 50 mg that afternoon. He went to bed at 7:30 PM which is abnormal for him but he slept all night.
After a few isolated periods of rambling/racing thoughts and speech, he is back to normal on Brand Name Zoloft phew!
This is a warning to thoise who switch to generic Zoloft. It may not work correctly. If you do switch monitor yourself or your patient for a few days to be sure all is well. The generic we got were cream colored oval tablets. The Brand Name Zoloft 100's are tan and lozenge shaped.
By the way my son is in his senior year of high school, we are thankful he may be able to graduate this fall (he missed a semester). His grades are good and his teachers like him but I feel that continuing the generic Zoloft may have led to another episode which would have interfered with his education.
