It would be more prudent to only take one or the other due to the possibility of serotonin syndrome or adverse effects from too much serotonin transmission. Effexor works on both serotonin and norepinephrine; there is evidence that boosting both of these systems tends to work better in the long term than simply taking an SSRI such as Zoloft.
