I've only taken wellbutrin once, and then only for a few months. It's supposed to be on the more activating than sedating. This means, depending on your body, that it could give you energy--or make you more anxious, and possibly less able to sleep easily. Sedating types of ADs, like nardil, or often effexor, tend to reduce anxiety, and can help you to sleep better, or even too well, or possibly make you feel tired during the day.
It's less likely to cause weight gain than effexor, and is said to cause fewer sexual side-effects. So it could address some of the downsides of effexor.
Another drug, closer to effexor, and also more activating, is cymbalta.
