Unfortunately, there are not many investigations in American medical literature to evaluatate its efficacy in the treatment of depression. The one study performed by the NIH failed to demonstrate efficacy.

You know, I think there is a major problem with the way psychiatric drugs are evaluated. It is expected that one drug be able to treat an illness monotherapeutically. This leaves out the possibility that some very effective augmentors become available. For instance, ritanserin by itself might not be effective as an antidepressant, but it would probably be great as an augmentor to standard antidepressants because it is a potent 5-HT2 antagonist. It is used now only in lab experiments. The same can be said of gepirone as a 5-HT1a partial agonist. As of now, if a drug is discovered to be an augmentor, it is only by accident with one that is already available to treat other illnesses. The mentality of the drug companies is to produce a single compound that performs multiple tasks. It might be more productive to produce a variety of molecules that are selective to perform one task so as to be used in combination with other selective agents. This is the sort of strategy used to develop treatments for other illnesses like AIDS.
