Which SSRIs have you tried? Some of them are much, much less activating than others. Zoloft had me bouncing out of my skin, but Lexapro sedated me so much I could literally not speak at times. If you haven't tried more than one or two, it does make sense to try the others before you give up. They really are safer than most other classes.

And are they really making you hypomanic? Or are you just feeling so good that someone else says you're hypomanic? If you think that you are, then you probably are, but if it's someone who has just never seen you when you're not depressed, it might be that they're wrong. (And I'd bet your pdoc hasn't ever seen you when you're not depressed, huh?) I only ask this, though, because the first time I took an AD, the doctor was afraid I was hypomanic. After checking, though -- she decided this was probably who I would have been if I hadn't been so depressed for so many years, just a cheerful, bubbly kind of person.

Last, if the SSRIs maybe could work, but make you hypomanic, have you ever tried a mood stabilizer? Many of them, including Li, are said to be great augmenters of ADs, so it's worth a try even if you're not getting actual mania or hypomania. In fact, my last pdoc, Dr CattleProd, suggested at one point that we stop the ADs entirely, and see if Li would do the trick. And I'm very much unipolar...

Good luck, whatever happens.
