Citalopram ODT

Posted by Iansf on February 8, 2006, at 19:50:41

On December 20, the FDA approved an orally disintegrating tablet (ODT) formulation of immediate-release citalopram HBr (brand name unreleased, made by Biovail Technologies, Inc). The tablets are available in 10-, 20-, and 40-mg dosage strengths.
According to a company news release, the formulation is intended to offer physicians a new dosing option that may be advantageous when addressing the needs of patients who have difficulty swallowing tablets or who may have limited access to water.
Study results suggest that nearly 40% of adults in the United States have experienced problems with swallowing tablets, and a significant proportion of those fail to comply with their prescribed and ongoing dosage.
Citalopram was previously approved in 10-, 20-, and 40-mg tablet formulations (Celexa, made by Forest Laboratories Inc; generics marketed by various manufacturers). It is indicated for the treatment of depression.
