Its a serious antibiotic, not one used casually -- its unfortunate that there have been liver disease links, but antibiotics are always staying one step ahead of being useless, especially overprescribing. It has some proven advantages for preventing resistance. Ultimately it and all its predecessors will become useless.

The worst problem though is staying ahead of MRSA hospital aquired infections as vancomycin (the last resort drug of recent times) is becoming less useful. The latest one (warning, not a pleasant picture) is Zyvox http://www.zyvox.com/Index.asp?hcp=true
