Re: try neurontin as used in a goldstein case repo

In reply to try neurontin as used in a goldstein case report??, posted by iforgotmypassword on October 1, 2005, at 9:07:36

I remember my first 100mg dose of Neurontin causing enough muscle relaxation to make me think my eyelids were drooping. An anti-anxiety effect was also noted, but not emotional blunting. Poop out occurred and I had to eventually raise the dose to 300mg TID, but at that dose, too much weight gain and brain fog occurred. Later I was using 600mg at bedtime in conjuction with trazodone and it was the best sleep I've had, though still not optimal for me.

I wonder if I'll experience the same thing with pregabalin, now that's available.

Too bad Jay Goldstein is not practicing anymore.

> A forty-eight year old married male Caucasian psychiatrist had not been able to work for two years due to exhaustion, exertional intolerance, diffuse pain, non-restorative sleep, hypersomnia, and markedly impaired short-term memory. He had tried many pharmacologic treatment modalities prior to seeing me, and had also been psychoanalyzed. He was quite depressed about his somatic symptoms, but also had an apparent unresolved grief reaction about the death of his mother ten years previously. When re recollected this event, even in the office with me, he would begin to cry.
> He had an immediate complete remission of all somatic symptoms after 400 mg of gabapentin (Neurontin). I asked him again to recall the death of his mother. He did so, and experienced an appropriate sense of loss, but none of the behavioral manifestations of severe sadness exhibited an hour previously. He reported that his cognitions about her death were profoundly altered, "Everyone dies, even those you love."

> i'm kind of interested and kind of worried at the same time. the good thing is the effects are noted at the first dose, so id only have to try it once to see what it does... i'm kind of worried about emotional blunting due to his feelings towards his mother's death after meds. it sounds positive, but im worried if its just a bandaid and inhibits negative emotions you need to be able to feel, and furthering apathy and anhedonia. i like the possibe beneficial cognitive effects as well... i wonder if it helps poorly coordinated motor skills. anyways 400mg, just like that, good idea, bad idea? is one dose to early to tell?
