add-ons for neuroleptic-induced weight gain

In reply to Amantidine for Zyprexa weight gain?, posted by fires on September 16, 2005, at 16:59:20

hey! I also read somewhere that sibutramine is being used along with zyprexa (presumbably also seroquel and risperdal) at the initiation of therapy to reduce problems with weight. My guess is that as neuroleptics branch out (with products like Symbyax, for instance) it will be necessary to make the weight gain factor a little less intense. I've read reports here and there about using older diet drugs--phentermine, tenuate, that kind of thing--and the results seem good, but those kind of pills are usually meant for 8-12 week one-time-only use. Referring Zyprexa patients to weight watchers apparently also helps, but this is probably more pronounced among those with severe bipolar or schizophrenia (these groups have a greater tendency towards inactivity and poor diet than the general population). I imagine that some sort of chemical intervention will be necessary for many, many people who take atypicals.
