My sister's pdoc would not prescribe her xanax b/c of the high risk for addiction and abuse. He placed her on effexor xr. I thought that was far worse but what do I know... I am the one on all the meds anyway... I have been on Xanax for awhile and find I do not have cravings or anything for it. I have panic attacks and true overwhelming anxiety attacks (mostly at work) and the xanax is my safe haven. It quickly blankets and brings a rush of releif and I think if you don't need the relief it maybe becomes a high for others. During that high; they really don't know what is going on, makes it easier to talk to people... they don't know really what is going on... and are far more open... Hope this helps... I know it didn't really answer your question... but I tried...
