vagus nerve stimulator approved by FDA

Posted by laurenjb on July 18, 2005, at 5:12:58

Hi all:

I just wanted to share with the board that the vagus nerve stimulator, an implant therapy used since 1997 for treatment of epilepsy, has finally been approved for use in treatment of depression (I believe, specifically for treatment-resistant depression -- isn't that all of us?!). Anyway, clinical trials were very promising and I've already talked to a doctor about it -- he has been using it for epilepsy treatment and is a fan of it. It is essentially a pacemaker, implanted during a one-hour surgery under local (I think) anesthesia. You might want to check the following link for more information:

www.vagusnervestimulator.com

I'd love to hear if anyone here has had any experience with this treatment. If not, I will certainly share my experiences if and when I get the implant.

Take care, Lauren
