In reply to heart racing Adderall doc fixed prob, posted by calamityjane on February 23, 2005, at 6:21:21

I had the same prob. with Ritalin, and even though I have been on Adderall for about 2 years in total now I recently have developed symptoms like you mentioned after taking a 20 mg. pill...
I too thought it might be a heart problem etc., but apparently I was having panic attacks? I cannot be certain if it is due to the Adderall or not at this point.
My pdoc reluctantly rx'ed a low dose of Klonopin but it has recently lost it's effectiveness for me and I feel a need to keep raising the dose to alleviate the panic & anxiety.
I am currently (and have been for over a year) on Lexapro.
Oh, in case you didn't know, while it is true Ativan is controlled, it is not as "tightly" controlled as Adderall or Ritalin. Ativan is a schedule IV drug whereas Adderall/Ritalin are schedule II drugs.

> For those who responded with advice a couple of weeks ago when I wrote, thanks! You were all so helpful.
> I finally went back to the doc a couple of days ago. My heart was racing so fast and I was just not feeling right. Got freaked out on the meds thinking there was something wrong with my heart. It happened with the Ritalin too, only the Ritalin would cause paranoia like no other. So, even though I should have known this b/c I have had panic attacks in the past, that is all that was wrong with the meds. So, I now take 1/2 of a .05 ativan when I take my 20mg Adderall. The panic is gone. No heart palpitations. No paranoia or thinking I am going to die! Its great. Still, the Adderall is not as effective as the first time, but I think going off of it a few days and planning for the days I know I am going to need it helps (like a big study day or cleaning the house). In between days I still have Ritalin I can use
> The Ativan, however, is not something that I plan on continuing. It is only a temporary fix and I began to take Lexapro last night. Hopefully that will fix the prob. I personally don't want to be on Ativan, it scares me to be on controlled substances. I don't want to get hooked on them.
> Anyway, thanks for listening to my story.
