I have been on Zyprexa for almost 5 years now. It was a life saver for me by getting rid of the mania that was ruining my career and social life. In the past, it has made me kind of foggy so I have tried other things like Abilify and Geodon for a couple months each. The abilify made me restless and the Geodon...well, it made me freak out.
It seemed like my only option was to live like a hibernating bear and experience the lethargy, apathy, and hypersomnia that I was blaming on the Zyprexa. My pdoc added Lamictal to my cocktail about 5 weeks ago and it has helped immensely!! I am no longer hibernating in my bed day and night; I feel like I can get things accomplished, and I do (my house has never been so clean), and I have my emotions back - but in a good way. I'm taking 20 mgs of Zyprexa which is what I have always taken, and I'm taking 100 mgs of Lamictal on my way up to 200 mgs.
Whether this newfound lack of fogginess is to be attributed to the Zyprexa/Lamictal mix or to the Lamictal alone, I can't tell. Perhaps my apathy, lethargy, and hypersomnia were due to depression that wasn't being treated properly with the Prozac or Paxil I had tried without much success...I'll never know. What I do know is that I am a happy, calm, and productive person again these days who sleeps no more than 7-8 hours instead of the 14-18 hours I used to sleep. Needless to say, my relationship with my husband is much improved as he is no longer left to manage the house alone while I sleep for the night and half the day and then when I am up, just play couch potato with no energy for anything. It feels good to be alive again, in the full sense of the word.
