In reply to Wellbutrin and anxiety - should I try again?, posted by annesand on November 19, 2004, at 14:11:24

I was switched to Wellbutrin XR for a while after suffering some unpleasant side effects/lack of efficacy on Zoloft (@ 100 mg./day).
I also felt a rise in anxiety while on the Wellbutrin, particularly at higher doses (anything above 100 mg./day, really). It also did seemingly nothing for my seasonal aff. depression, for which I have found Lexapro to be most effective for.
I decided to taper off of the Wellbutrin and got back on Lexapro @ 15 mg./day.(I have been on Lexapro a few times). There was only a short period of time in which I took the combination of both Lexapro & Wellbutrin daily, and the Wellbutrin was then a very low dose since I was tapering off of it(100 mg./day i think).
Lately I have been suffering from panic/anxiety for various reasons. Recently I had the dose of 15 mg./day of Lexapro (for seasonal aff. depression) to 20 mg./day. It has helped substantially with my SAD; however, on 15 mg./day I did not notice it being of help in relation to my anxiety/panic problems.
Even though the dose has been raised for weeks now, my pdoc said it may be too soon to tell if the upped dose will be of any aid for my anxiety problems. As of yet, I feel it has not been.
A past roommate of mine was on a daily combination of Lexapro and Wellbutrin and she felt it worked very well for her (she had depression/OCD-type problems, etc.). However, she also felt the Lexapro had been making her tired during the day.
Do you still feel anxious just the Lexapro now?
If not, maybe you could trying adding a low dose of Wellbutrin back in to start with and see how you feel. I would discuss this and any alternatives with your pdoc.
Personally, I have found Lexapro to be pretty much weight neutral, but everyone is different.
Best,
L.

> After an agonizing withdrawal from Effexor, I tried Wellbutrin for depression/anxiety. It was good for charging my battery and for weight loss, but it made my anxiety worse. I added Lexapro, but the anxiety was still terrible, so I dropped the Wellbutrin. Now I've been on just Lexapro for a while, and my mood is good, but I'm pretty sleepy and gaining weight again. Does it make any sense to try adding Wellbutrin back in? Maybe now that my mood is under control, I wouldn't have so much anxiety?? I know everybody's different, but I wonder if anyone has tried this with success. Thanks.
