I have tried L-tryptophan a few times. They say that 5-htp is stronger, since it is L-tryptophan's metabolite, but in my experience L-tryptophan feels much more potent. Yes it is more potent than st. john's wort -- which just tends to make me sleepy. Yes there is an immediate effect - within 30min of taking it. I would characterize it as at first energizing then hypnotic. For me the effects were not effectively anti-depressant, this was at 500 mg. I can't imagine taking 2 grams! At 500mg I would feel extremely calm and dazed, in the emotionally blunted ssri way. My balance was affected also, I found myself stumbling a bit, etc. Of course there's no way to see how you'll react until you try it. I heard it's becoming more available in the U.S. now, I didn't know they were selling it in health food stores now though.

> so the fellow in the health food store told me L-tryptophan was the best natural antidepressant....more powerful than st. john's wart, more studies done on it, and supposedly it works within the first day....
