In reply to Nardil, Parnate or Marplan?? Confused!, posted by becksA on September 9, 2004, at 8:09:46
> Having never tried MAOI's before, I don't really know what to expect. After doing abit of research I am thinking I want to try Parnate, for it's "stimulating" characteristics, and less side effects. ALthough I don't know much about Marplan. Insight much appreciated. Thanks
Marplan has always been thought of by most psychiatrists as being a "weak" Nardil. That being said, there are some people who respond to Marplan who don't respond to Nardil, but this seems to be infrequent. Marplan definitely has milder side effects than Nardil, but probably is less effective in that it doesn't work for as many people. When it does work, it can work well.I tried Marplan once. I was silly enough to discontinue it after only two weeks because I wasn't feeling anything positive. I wasn't feeling anything negative either. It was much cleaner than either Parnate or Nardil with respect to startup side effects. I should have stayed on it for at least 4 weeks at a therapeutic dosage. I don't remember the dosage I worked up to.
Your reasons for going with Parnate make sense, especially if social phobia is not an issue.
Good luck with it.
