desipramine and nortriptyline are tricyclic antidepressants, which were more widely used before the adent of SSRI's. They work more on norepinephrine reuptake than on serotonin. They are more useful than SSRI's for conditions of chronic pain, melancholic depression, and probably severe depression as well.
