This is a huge problem--so many women with mental health problems such as bipolar also have severe PMDD Treatments are scarce. I can't take any antidepressants as they make me mixed/or manic. Unstable anyway. And that is the first order of treatment. After that I had a Mirena device installed--a birth control type thing that also just helps with bad period disorder largely by taking periods away. This is the answer for some women. It didn't work for me, because Ihave a very great tendency to gain lots of weight on hormones or hormone-effecting drugs and just ballooned. But it did help the period situation, I think. I was so generally upset and depressed at the time it is hard to disentangle the feelings that came from this way or that. Not all women gain lots of weight on a Mirena device.

I can't take the pill, any b/c pill, as it zooms me into a Mixed State.

Sleeping well, lowering anxiety through medicine and lifestyle, making sure you are able to reduce your pressures during the worst part of it, and having a healthy, low or no caffeine/sugar/junk food diet does help. Doing whatever you can to lower your own emotional tone several notches--escapism in safe ways, ca really help. I do this religiously.

Orgazmic experiences can help relax the tension in the uterine area.

There are many advocates of vitamins like B6, which can reduce waterbloat. I do in fact find that diuretics safely used a week before due date helps more than any amount of Evening Primrose. I feel my brain itself gets unbalanced from too much water in the brain---well, that is how it feels. And less bloat makes me feel less headachey and distraught. Water pills don't suit everyone so check with doctor before using. On lithium it is very dangerous. but with medical supervision it can be done.

What we really need is for researchers to give a concerned look at this common problem. Throwing Prozac at us, and if that isn't possible, nothing at all, is hardly good science. Reading letters from women with PMDD and disorders like bipolar, and meeting them in public, and being one of them myself along with four other similar women in my family (mother and sisters), leads me to believe there is a fascinating relationship between hormone imbalance and mood disorders. I might add thyroid in there too, since four out of six of my female relatives have had severe thyroid disease--hyper-type. Surely scientists would be panting at the bit to get into such a seeminglyu rich store????
