> I was diagnosed with Adult ADD in Dec 03, my son is ADHD, I have been on Adderall since Dec and I am finding that I cannot sleep very well and it is causing me to swell. My son just went to Strattera a few weeks ago and he is doing ok. He is still pretty fidgety but he is doing somewhat better at school. I have asked the doctor for Strattera for myself as well but I am wondering if the Strattera is going to give me the same " awake and go mode" that I am used to with the Adderall? I am so much happier to know that after 31 years I am not depressed or stupid, but I do not want to go on the Strattera if it is going to make me sleepy. I work a fast paced job and cannot afford to slow down or be groggy. Any input?

I've tried Strattera and thought I would also mention my experiences on desipramine, which does essentially the same thing and is much cheaper. I found that while both gave me insomnia, the Strattera was somewhat worse in this regard, and Stattera also made me much more sleepy/groggy during the day. I do not have true ADD but do have some ADD symptoms related to my depression. I found both equally effective in that regard.

I do not believe you would find either drug as activating as Adderall, and both of them are likely to cause side effects such as constipation and dry mouth related to their powerful blockade of norepinephrine reuptake. I also suffered tachycardia on both, with my resting heart rate in the 90's on desipramine and around 110 on Strattera. My heart rate declined after a month or so on the desipramine, and I believe it would have also on the Strattera if I had stayed on it. My blood pressure also declined with increasing dosage of the desipramine, a feat the Strattera would be unlikely to duplicate, as it lacks desipramine's weak alpha-1 blockade that was responsible for the anti-hypertensive effect.

I believe you would find both drugs to not be as good in the sexuality area as Adderall (unless you have a problem with hypersexuality to begin with). I noticed a modest decrease in libido on both, as well as some discomfort during orgasm, again, both of these effects likely due to the drugs' blockade of NE reuptake. Adding an alpha-1 blocker cured the orgasm difficulties. I noticed no erectile problems with either drug, but apparently, this can be a problem for some people.
