This has to do with a common fallacy (that I once believed in) that "more must be better". That is what the core of "substance abuse" is. It's really as simple as that. You made a spiritual mistake, and are probably in a spirital crisis. Perhaps getting off of the benzos, or at least reducing them to a sane dose, is a good idea so you can see clearly what all of your anxiety--and more importantly, the excessive drug taking--is about, because no one except people with psychotic agitation need 8mg klonopin/day, let alone 24mg. The MAXIMUM DOSE given to _epileptics_ that have become tolerant to benzos but still need it for seizure control is 20mg. 2mg of klonopin is capable of stopping uncontrollable seizure activity in an ER in many circumstances. You get the idea. Please get your dose of klonopin back down as much as possible, because long-term use at that dose has a good chance of modifying the benzodiazepine/GABA-A receptor complex such that you may NEVER be able to get off of benzos.

Unfortunately, your doctor and the hospital you are going to have to go to to be [painfully] detoxed will not understand this. I was detoxed from 40mg diazepam/day in THREE DAYS inpatient. Why not just attach me to a wheel and spin me around or dunk me in a pool until I confess that I am the devil?!? The ideal situation I could imagine for you is to go inpatient and just have them reduce your Klonopin rapidly to a sane dose while giving you additional medication such as hypnotics, mood stabilizers, and antipsychotics to control the symptoms. Then, once they get you stable, they could start you on courses of additional medication for the long haul.

By the way, Klonopin lasts 20 hours or more in the body, so taking it three times a day at that high of a dosage is not necessary. You may have thought that you were only experiencing 8mg at a time, but you are really on 24mg now. If you feel a compulsion to take it three times per day (once again, I once experienced this), you have a notably vicious psychological dependence in addition to your physical dependence. Another thing you should know is that after you get used to it, Klonopin will not help you sleep at all. In fact, at that dosage, it is probably wrecking your sleep architecture.

Best wishes, and I pray that you have a sympathetic doctor/treatment team.
