Lexapro withdrawal -- Remeron is helping me

Posted by JohnFromCalifornia on January 16, 2004, at 20:10:45

As many on this board know from bitter experience, SSRI withdrawal can be tougher than kicking narcotic pain killers.

That certainly has been the case for me. After less than two months on SSRIs (Paxil 25mg then Lexapro 10mg), I'd had enough. I was feeling sick ALL THE TIME. And fortunately my depression is by nature intermittent and occasional -- I know I'm one of the lucky ones and therefore my opinions do not apply to all or even most of the situations of members of this board.

But for me, I'm convinced my occasional depression is not caused by a chemical imbalance, or at least one that is affected by SSRIs, Wellbutrin or Buscar.

I'm starting my second week of withdrawal from 10mg/day Lexapro, and am amazed at how tenacious this drug is. I have the usual side effects: feeling flu-like, severe insomina, anxiety -- all at mind-bending levels.

When it gets unbearable I take half a Paxil, but only relucantly because I've concluded that these drugs are doing me more harm than good. Since early November I've gained 15 lb, stopped all exercise and can barely work.

The other night when my insomina was just too much to take, I dug out some old Remeron 30mg tablets. (Taken whole these things totally zonk me out, but they have been effective in the past for short-term depression.)

I cut a Remeron into quarters and put one quarter under my tongue. The acidy-orange flavor was familiar. Within a half-hour my Lex anxiety had disappeared. Within an hour I was asleep and slept soundly for 11 hours!

Today started out a bit groggy for me, but I perked up as the day went on. I had a nice, refreshing nap this afternoon. Will see if I need the Remeron to help me sleep tonight. But in the meantime, I know I have a solution to my insomnia.

SSRI withdrawal has to be one of the most phsycially and mentally exhausting experiences you can go through, and sleep does wonders for healing in both departments.

Good luck to all.
