Paxil? Zoloft? Stopping Prozac? Long post

Posted by kotsunega on December 23, 2003, at 20:02:19

All,
For the new fiscal year our company's insurance drug plan has defined Prozac as being a non-preferred drug, while both Paxil and Zoloft are considered preferred drugs. What this means to me is a higher copay for prescriptions from the list of non-preferred drugs. I've been on Prozac for more than 10 years and, with the new drug formulary, was considering talking to my pdoc about switching to Paxil or Zoloft, since the copay will be cheaper. I don't notice the effects of Prozac anymore, so I don't know if I am still getting an optimal benefit from it. I'm Bipolar 1 and take Zyprexa for mania with psychosis, but I haven't really felt depressed in all the time I have been on Prozac (I was originally dx'd major depressive, then the mania became evident). I've heard lots of withdrawal problems occur with Effexor, so was only going to consider either Paxil or Zoloft. Anybody know of having problems switching from Prozac to either Paxil or Zoloft? Anybody have Prozac withdrawal problems? I have a social phobia condition and remember hearing that either Paxil or Zoloft (I can't remember which) is good for that. Any thoughts, anyone? Thanks!
