In my experience, 2 weeks is a long time to detox off of alcohol. I've only know of 5-day crash course detox's. Librium is a wonderful drug to make it possible to transition the body from thinking it needs alcohol to realizing it doesn't. But, for the rich, there are extended rehab programs that last for weeks. Maybe there, you have the option of extending a detox longer than 5 days. If your doctor will let you, more power to him.

However, I can understand how a psychiatrist wouldn't want to waste sessions on a person who is doped up on Librium. It'll be your crutch until you do have your sessions. But when the Librium runs out, your crutch is gone. I wish you luck then.

> I'm currently being given Librium (25 - 100 mg daily, "as needed"). This treatment will continue for about two weeks, after which I will be tapered off the drug. There seems to be a lot of contention regarding the use of this drug for detox. In my case my psychiatrist is managing the Librium prescription. My counselor, who does not agree with using Librium for more than a few days, has actually refused to set up appointments with me until the Librium is cleared out of my system. This essentially means that I can get no counseling, even if I need it, for at least two weeks. I've informed the psychiatrist about this situation. I was wondering what anyone else's opinion on this matter was. If the counselor right? Should I let the psychiatrist manage the med and seek another counselor who's a little less polarized about this issue?
