Mine didn't come back for almost 5 years. I think as long as you stay honest and self-aware, and also let some select friends/family members know what to look out for in case of relapse, quitting is worth a shot if it is what you really want to do.
After my relapse, I have decided to continue my meds indefinitely. But we all know that depression is complicated and variable, so you may certainly be successful...good luck whatever you decide to do!
