Provigil for weight loss??Social Phobia??

Posted by jay on August 8, 2003, at 2:13:55

Just curious if anyone taking modafinil/Provigil/Alertec(in Canada) and find that it helps with weight control? Also, does it work well with SSRI's and benzos for social phobia? See, much of my current social phobia comes from a few things: 1) being depressed and anxious for so many years, it's a hard habit to break (even though I am feeling better with my new Prozac/clonazepam/risperdal doses). 2) the meds, and my apathy towards exercise, have caused some majorly hefty weight gain, enough that it may effect my health, leading me open to heart disease, diabetes, etc.(I am a 33 year old male) All's I need is that 'little boost' to help with weight, and I think I will do *extremely well*. I was a VERY high functioning individual before my 'breakdown', who was in fairly good shape, had an excellent career making good money, etc. I am finnaly at the point where I *can* see myself even going beyond that, a better person who gets even more enjoyment about just waking up everyday. I fell as far as I think possible to go with mental illness, and have not stopped searching, changing (meds, etc..) until I feel *excellent* most of the time. I think we should all strive for that, and I encourage people to go beyond just 'surviving', to make their experience with mental health make them an even better person. I think *we all* deserve that. I am coming up to my 13'th or so year of treatment, and in timeline, this seems to be the very likely 'turnaround' for many mental health patients. (They say proper diagnosis can take up to 10 years...and then searching for the proper med combos..) Along the way, I fired two pdocs, and went on a year-long search for a GP who was willing to work well, and open, with me on medications. I've been lucky, as my GP not only has a very deep, empathetic concern, a wonderful, open man indeed, and he listens to and reads the literature I bring in. That has been another *major* key part of my healing. So, modafinil/Provigil is likely not out of the question.

Can anyone relate any experiences with this med, or any similar med, that could help with my current 'cocktail' by adding said med? As I said..I am looking for a bit of a 'kickstart' to help with my weight, and some possible further social-phobic treatments. Then I would feel more motivated to go out and exercise, as I am also lucky to have aged well and at 33, have been told I look like I am in my early 20's. But, that means *nothing* on a spiritual level, just for my own self-esteem and overall health.

Thak you very much for reading and any insight/responses...I appreciate it MAJORLY!

Jay
