It took a long time to clear my system too- I'd say it was about a month before I felt normal again and as a result, I had to go up even higher on the risperdal which I was initially trying to get off of.

I have also had some experiences where negative side-effects of a drug have lasted long beyond its discontinuation. I was afraid I would never be right again. Fortunately, they did dissipate over the course of weeks or months.

Often, there is no accounting for why any one person has a particular reaction to a specific drug. Two drugs that look alike can still have very different effects on the same individual. That being said, Geodon and Abilify are similar in some ways that make them different from Risperdal. Both drugs are agonists at the 5-HT1a serotonin receptor and antagonists at D3 dopamine receptors. However, Geodon and Abilify are different from each other. Geodon has been reported to inhibit the reuptake of both serotonin and norepinephrine, properties it shares with Effexor. Abilify does not. I won't make any recommendations because I would not want to dissuade you from trying a drug that might be perfect for you. I don't feel our understanding of the brain and the mechanisms of drug action is sufficient to be able to confidently predict how Abilify will affect you. Maybe Stephen Stahl can, but I can't.

Whatever you decide, I hope things turn out well for you.
