i think it's because of the stimulation of 5-HT (serotonin) autoreceptors that occurs early on (bcz of that extra serotonin floating around from the reuptake inhibition), which results in decreased 5-HT release. Eventually (within about a month) the autoreceptors downregulate and there is an increase in 5-HT release. . That's how i understand it anyway; i could be wrong.
i guess we're lucky that the autoreceptors apparently downregulate so much faster than the postsynaptic receptors-- otherwise SRIs wouldn't work, right? Weird.
