There is no evidence that modern drugs, SSRIs, etc. are any more effective at treating depression, than TCAs. There is some evidence that MAOIs are in fact better than SSRIs and TCAs, for some populations. Further, the tolerability of TCAs is only marginally worse, as measured by drop out rates in clinical studies, than SSRIs.
