It has something to do with glutamate regulation;
i really don't have the education to understand
neurophysiology. Here are a couple of articles
describing its action -- something, which by the
way has only recently been discovered:

As for supplements, i am not sure what you mean --
supplement to lithium? or substitute? It would
take some knowledge of psychopharmacology to see
if these mood stabilizers have the same effect.
