I take 2000 mg per day of glucosamine sulfate only (1000 mg in the morning and 1000mg at night) for my dodgy knees and I'm pretty sure that it helps.( I ruined my knees doing martial arts - karate). At one stage my knees were so bad that I could't even take my dogs for their walk anymore and running is still completely out of the question for me.

The reason I decided to take the glucosamine was that there is some good research that appears to back up the effectiveness of these supplements.

I can't really say much about chondroiton or msm but here's a link to a site that provides some details of the research that is available
