How long to test out a medication change?

Posted by samenewme on November 20, 2002, at 15:57:52

I'm on Remeron 30 mg (more than that keeps me awake at night) and was supplementing with Celexa 20 mg. To try to escape sexual side effects, my doctor has switched my second med to Lexapro. He offered me the choice of starting with 10 to see if the effects go away, and then going to 5 if not, or starting with 5.

I opted to start with 5, figuring it's easier to go up than down. I've been doing this for less than a week and sexual side effects are already diminished. Unfortunately, so is my mood, just a bit. (Hard to tell how much as my husband is undergoing neck surgery next week and I'm way overstressed.)

I'm not sure yet whether this is too low a dosage, or whether I'm simply having dosage adjustment blues. How long should I tough it out? I'm not dangerously depressed; I just don't feel "right" and feel a sort of slide coming on.

I'm thinking that two weeks sounds about right. My doctor has left this up to my judgment but I'm interested in others' experiences.
