new, ketogenic dieting contraindicated c parnate?

Posted by djinni on September 29, 2002, at 15:01:58

hi. although i've been reading various parts of dr bob's immense website for years; i've never participated. i have a dx of BP1 and just started Parnate recently. [i may add reboxetine later; though probably not as my pdoc is conservative.] i had a lot of trouble getting a BP and pulse AT ALL and gave up on the parnate and kept having restarts at prompting of pdoc. a BP of 60/40 with a pulse of 40 DOES NOT feel good; plus i noticed it was during these period of unbelievable low vital signs that i would get the 'sleep attacks' from parnate; unfortunately i am a career insomniac and there was no was to induce these at night! odd yes? but napping during the day was very strange; plus night sleep (60mg tranzene,60mg restoril, may restart topamax@100mg)well, all in all i was sleeping at least 18-22 hours a day. this would not do. what seems to make a difference is taking salt tablets 2 tabs qid and staying hydrated (i hate water but drink diet lemonaide.) hydrated; but not to the point that the hydration becomes a diuretic. i also take some vitamin, mineral supplements including K+.

anyway i have some weight to lose. i gained 60 pounds from taking BC pills to get rid of the horrid androgenic effects of NMDA/AMPA antagonists; which i hope to never take again in those huge quantities. i have gained weight once or twice before in large amounts like this. always i go on a severe ketogenic diet and for a long time and finally i am at normal weight, which is light. HOWEVER, i did run into trouble once with the topamax high dose; my ketosis turned into lactic acidosis necessitating a week in hospital. but, i have done ketosis since then no problem so must have just been idiomatic.

is there any reason NOT to begin and maintain a ketogenic diet on parnate, so long as i keep my electrolytes up, especially the NA(salt) for fluid volume and the potassium? the parnate makes me feel 'normal'; something i've not felt in 15 years; so it is important.

incidentally, i don't seem to get much of a pressor response off the no-no foods. i don't eat the really gross ones of course such as sardines and i don't drink.

well! much written; not much said. thank you for your time.

PS--what would my Pdoc say? i don't know. he's a bit chapped with me at the moment for calling too much at the office with the parnate 'jitters' and fear; knowing him i suspect he would 'shrug.'
the weight is very important to me. i will not buy new clothes or go anywhere fat. this is for me; not in the eyes of others. ok/OUT
