Anne,

I am not sure what the brand name is in France, but valproic acid (an anticonvulsant), might be helpful to control mania in the presence of heart disease without causing adverse effects related to heart function. Tegretol is structurally related to tricyclic antidepressants. That is why it should be avoided in patients with heart disease.
