Hi Geno,

Phenobarb binds to a site on the GABA receptor, and so do the benzodiazepines like Xanax. Both enhance the nice mellow inhibitory effect of our natural GABA.

However, phenobarb and Xanax reach different concentrations in different parts of the brain. Also they may 'like' some types of GABA receptors more than others.

So they have slightly different profiles. This means withdrawal will be helped some by phenobarb but you will definitely still experience some symptoms.

Hang in there,

Kate
