I am not answering your question directly ...I am bipolar II and have been doing a lot of research from pubmed etc...it really looks as if bipolar II might be different causal from bipolar I...lithium didn't work for me..it might not work for rapid cyclers...the doctor put me on topamax almost three months ago..within four days on 100 mg my depression/oppression diminished greatly..
it is a different kind of anticonvulsant ..and also has had success with partial epilepsy that is refractory...and success with migraines ...interesting...re kindling..and the amygdala(sp)increased blood flow...why does this one drug help these conditions if there isn't some relationship ..some thing that amygdala is enlarged in depressed people because of increased blood flow..also amygdala is seat of fear...talk about anxiety...the doctor gave me risperdal and also paxil and klonopin..klonopin also originally for seizures but really does work on my anxiety..
I was misdiagnosed at first..antidepressants didn't touch my depression or anxiety...celexa at a higher dose made me more hypomanic...serzone made me into a zombie...as I said lithium did dull me but made me fatter and made me more depressed but didn't touch the anxiety...
there really seems to be a link at least between partial epilepsy possibly migraines and bipolar II and possibly post traumatic stress syndrome.. hope this helps as a start
bobby
ps the risperdal doesn't help too much with the anxiety but does help big time with obsessive thoughts and setting limits on the rage or intense feelings when they come up...I call bipolar II the disorder of having no middle ground..

Hi all
>
> still looking around for answer to same problem that I've posted about before, in brief I have what look like bipolar II, or cyclothymia with lots of anxiety. Tried a very small amount of dexamphetamine after one doc thought I was ADD. BIG overreaction to dex, head filled couldn't think over-stiumlated, felt very blank and anxious. Anyway this has kept happening everyday now for almost a year. It has got a bit less over this time. Since then I have tried Zyprexa, Epilim, beta-blockers (which had some positive effect) and now am trying Lithium. An EEG suggested that I had some abnormality but wasn't conclusive. When it comes on I feel overstiumlated, blank and cut off from the world in a sensory sense, I am "not present" and don't take anything in. It is very frightening.
