IosM - Supplements (Help!)

Posted by Chris A. on May 2, 2002, at 0:13:04

After checking the archives, I picked you to help me
through the
nutraceutical maze (Help)! I wouldn't have asked, but
my pDoc (Stanford
and UCSF trained) discussed the article in Dec. 2001
issue of the J of
Clinical Psychiatry by BJ Kaplan with me today. He
thought it was worth
looking into, since a prestigious journal published
it. I am always his
willing guinea pig, but don't want to put out a lot of
money for
minerals, etc. that I can find almost anywhere. I also
freak out and
don't take anything that says "proprietary blend" on
it, because I have
had some problems with allergic reactions. My brain
also needs for me to
keep things simple. My general nutrition class from
30 years ago is of
no help (don't remember much). I'm probably not alone
in supplementing
with a hodge-podge, some of which I know I need, and
some of which I'm
unsure about. There always seems to be the chelated,
ionized etc.
controversies. I have trouble with the self-promoting
attitude at True
Hope. I'm so confused I don't even know what to ask
you. Bottom line:
What supplements do you recommend for someone who is
bipolar,
hypothyroid, mildly asthmatic with osteopenia and
GERD?
That's a big order, so you don't have to answer.
Currently I take
Calcium, magnesium, D, a balanced B, choline, zinc,
selenium, folate, E,
Glucosamine, as much Alaskan Salmon oil as I can
tolerate and a timed
released C. My pDoc suggested flax seed oil, but the
oils get to be a
problem with the GERD. I don't want to bring the True
Hope controversy
up, as I'm not fond of controversies. I just want some
common sense,
scientifically backed nutrition info.that could help
promote a better
quality of life. Now to the vegetable drawer...

Thanks for your thoughts,

Chris A.
