Need your collective wisdom

Posted by BLPBart on April 9, 2002, at 10:50:03

When I was first dx with depression my doc tried celexa. I had weird side effects from it. If I took it at night it kept me awake and if I took it in the morning it made me extremely sleepy. I then tried prozac. Prozac worked well on the depression and I was fine with it for a fairly long period of time. Then I started having some physical side effects from it, such as extreme fatigue and lethargy, muscle and joint pain, menstrual irregularities, weight gain, that weren't alleviated by adding wellbutrin. I eventually went off the prozac entirely and am on only wellbutrin SR 300 mg/day for the depression. A couple of months ago my pdoc added dexedrine because we thought I might also have inattentive ADD. This has worked really well for me as far as focusing at work and has also been great as far as giving me energy to make it through a whole day of work and then stuff at home since I'm a working mom. The problem is this. I've noticed that ever since I went off the prozac, my depression is sort of like a roller coaster. On the prozac, I pretty much felt good (mentally) all of the time. On the wellbutrin it's really up and down. I have these periods that last from a few days to a week where I get really down-not suicidal, just down and negative and I hate my husband and that sort of thing. At first my pdoc thought it was PMS since the first time it happened it coincided with the right time of the month. I've noticed since then, however, that it's not related to that at all, it seems more related to certain events that might kind of upset me or remind me of something that bothers me and then I can't forget it and I sink deeper and deeper into a depression and shut everyone else out. I don't know if I should try augmenting the wellbutrin with another AD. After my prozac experience, which I NEVER want to go through again, I'm a little scared off of the SSRIs. I'm still trying to lose the weight that I gained from the proza and I felt so exhausted on it that I never want to take anything that makes me feel that way again. I just got some SAMe and thought I'd give that a shot. I'm trying 400 mg/day. I was just wondering if any of you had this kind of experience and could suggest something that I might want to discuss with my pdoc. I go back to see him in a few weeks. I'm also worried that he might try to suggest that it's due to the dexedrine, although the first time I had the problem when he attributed it to PMS, I hadn't even started the dex yet.
