another cognitive problem

Posted by Bookgurl99 on March 9, 2002, at 0:00:57

Recently I started taking Luvox as I weaned off of Serzone, then had to stop taking Luvox immediately after 5 days because of an apparent allergic reaction.

I have not felt normal since first taking the Luvox.

The first week, I felt some rebound depression. I remained on the low dose of Serzone that I had been on, but did not increase it to its previous level.

Saturday (a week ago) I awoke with an enormous migraine headache. My partner and a friend took me to the ER; I received a shot of Benadryl and Reglan.(Reglen?)

I started to feel dizzy throughout the week and returned to the er; in this college town they thought I was either on drugs or a hypochondriac.

I thought I may have too much serotonin in my brain and stopped taking the serzone for a few days. Talk about cognitive impairment!

Within 2 days, I noticed that I was very cognitively impaired. I was unable to remember the name of a restaurant I had just been in, and was confused by normal everyday things. Even reading -- usually a delight -- was more difficult ; my eyes didn't want to track across the page.

I went to my doctor today (general practitioner). She said I have no sign of neurological impairment, that she feels my cognitive problems come from 'depressed brain activity' and 'low levels of neurotransmitters.' She advised me to slowly go back on the serzone -- 100 mg daily, increasing as I adjust -- and take 1-3g DHA and 1g phosphatydilserine every day.

I am doing what she says and feel that I have a slight improvement, but not what I would hope just yet.

Is it realistic that this level of cognitive impairment could come from the med changes I describe?

Should I just wait a few days and see what happens, or hightail it to the nearest ct scanner?

These decisions are all complicated by my not having health insurance and knowing that paying $800 for a ct scan that showed nothing would make me feel foolish; and that maybe the discouragement I've gotten from family/friends not to do so comes from the fear that something more permanent coudl be wrong.

*I could use your thoughts and prayers, thanks*
