Remeron- 60 mg, -overly sedating like 45 mg????

Posted by 3 Beer Effect on December 16, 2001, at 13:42:44

I took Remeron 45 mg for a little over a month and although it sounds like the perfect antidepressant on paper- especially for a social phobic/anxiety prone individual like myself, I had one major problem with it.

Remeron 45 mg was so sedating that I was sleeping about 17 hours per day and could not wake up in the morning to do homework or even attend my college classes! It also, compared to the SSRIs (which I can't tolerate due to the insomnia they cause) had little anti-depressant efficacy- I wouldn't even bother to get out of bed to take a shower or shave anymore which is very unlike me- i'm usually a pretty hygenic person when not depressed.

I read that in Europe they use higher doses of Remeron and hence have less problems with over sedation. I read in a psychopharmacology textbook that somewhere between 30 & 45 mg of Remeron the increased norepinephrine effects will counteract the strong antihistamine drowsiness effect of Remeron so then it should act like a normal antidepressant without all of the side effects of an SSRI.

Obviously for me, this increased norepinephrine effect didn't happen at 45 mg, but has anyone out there been on 60 mg or higher of Remeron? If I sleep 12 hours a night that would be fine with me, but 17 hours on 45 mg is downright ridiculous.
