> OK, I'm dropping into this discussion late, though I have made other posts RE:opiates as mood stabilizers. I have had that effect from opiates. As opposed to the "normal" sedative effects, I actually get a rather smooth lift in mood. I guess one would suggest that is why some people become heroin addicts, though I see that as a more complex issue. So,as to the agrument: can opiates be used to effectively treat mood disorders, as a mood stabilizer to go with an AD perhaps. I say, "yes". However, I do not know of any main-stream Pdocs that would be handing out scripts for schedule II narcotics as pyschotherapeutic meds. If anyone has some literature, or andecdotal information, please share.

Hi Pax,

Apparently there are only small number of mainsteam docs treating resistant treatment depression with opiates. We have had some long and bitter debates on this board in the past year over whether opiates should or should not be given for depression and whether they can be helpful or quite the opposite in having a great potential to contribute to a worsening of depression along with the creation of a substance abuse problem. I don't know that anyone here wants to revisit those debates. I'm sure I don't.

I started this thread to help me deal with a change in medication that involves opiates, not to discuss the *value* of opiates with ADs in general. If you are interested in discussing opiates in general as an adjunct to ADs, would you be willlng to start your own thread on this and not bring that debate onto this thread. I really need this thread for support, not debate. (Something like take your marbles and play elsewhere, not out of a spirit of unkindness, but to keep this thread supportive for me and the others who are presently participating.)

Because you are asking for some literature, or andecdotal information, my suggestion is that you do a PB search on opiates and depression; also buprenorphine (a partial opiate) and depression. There has been a lot of useful information (as well as some of the more conventional responses you would expect). Also andecdotal information. This search might help you establish what you want to pursue surrounding the subject of ADs plus opiates, that has not been discussed before (or some that have been discussed), but you have an interest in expanding on a new thread.
Thanks.

Shelli
