> I am new to the site and very pleased to be here. I am 57 years old and was first diagnosed with major depression in 1962 while in college (back when Elival and Niagara Falls were both brand new). Here is my question - 4 years ago I started Prozac 30mg/day and the medication worked just fine for about 2 years. The past two years I have had "sleeping sickness". I assumed it was Prozac "poop out"; for the past 3 months I have been on Wellbutrin 300mg and Zoloft 150mg with no result. The depression is not to bad but the chronic sleepiness, after 14 hours sleep at night plus naps, is really getting old. Stimulants are out due to passed abuse, I have been through the TCA's. Any helpful suggestion would be appreciated. Thanks

It is nice to meet my kindred sleeping spirit. I have been on Wellbutrin (350) and Zoloft (150) along with Klonopin to help with a Valium addiction, plus a miniscule dose of Seroquel at night to help with suicidal thoughts. My depression manifests in some serious hypersomnia (Rip Van Winkle has nothing on me). Due to prior addictions, I doubt any doc would prescribe me stimulants. I too can easily sleep 12-15 hours a night plus daily naps (very tough on a small busiess owner). I know this is depression related (I also cast some blame on the meds, specifically, Zoloft). as my condition is episodic and my sleeping patterns are perfectly normal when I am not in the throws of a medical maelstrom. Is this the case with you or is your hypersomnia constant? I posted on this problem a while back and received some good responses. One was to cut back my Zoloft to 100 and take it at night. Unfortunately, I am being weened off Wellbutrin due to significant weight loss but, while on it, I could take 350 of Wellbutrin at night and be asleep within 30 minutes. Another poster suggested augmenting with Adranafil, a mildly stimulating drug you have to obtain overseas as it is not FDA approved. It has been used to treat narcolepsy as well as depression. Do a search on Adranafil on the archives and you will receive alot of info. My order finally arrived today and I am hopeful this will help. As with most drugs, it takes a couple of weeks to get effects. Hope this helps and sweet dreams. :-).
