neurontin and depakote combo--weight gain?

Posted by super on August 8, 2001, at 9:38:36

I was taking 250 mg. Depakote each night with a little Xanax to help me sleep. I wanted to get off the Xanax (because my p-doc says it's not good to be on it long term) and also maybe get off (or at least lower) the Depakote (because I fear weight gain and other side effects associated with it)...so I switched to 150 mg. Depakote (sprinkles) and 150 mg. Neurontin at night--with no Xanax. (I might be slightly off on the dosages.) Now I heard from someone who gained 30 lbs. taking Neurontin and Depakote together, at similar dosages. Do Neurontin and Depakote work together to cause weight gain? Am I making any progress at all in terms of getting off meds that cause weight gain?

BTW, so far, the Neurontin doesn't seem to have the same anxiety-relieving effect of Xanax and I'm finding it hard to get off the Xanax simply by taking Neurontin (I can't sleep w/out Xanax).

One more question: another problem I had with Depakote was I was very tired in the morning. Will my new med plan do anything to help with that?

Thanks!
