Please HELP - PPD + Prozac?? Worse?

Posted by Cindylou on July 21, 2001, at 7:40:35

Hello,
I haven't posted here for awhile; things were getting smoother ... but I have been having some scary things happening -- could use some expert advice!

I have a 19-month old daughter, and I suffered from PPD and anxiety after she was born. I also have chronic depression, so it's hard to decipher sometimes between my "regular" depression and the PPD, but the PPD symptoms seem to have come back for some reason. This past week I keep picturing horrible things happening to my daughter -- choking, getting lost in the mall, getting in a car accident, etc. It's HORRIBLE, to say the least!

I just started taking Prozac about a month ago (have had trouble finding an AD that doens't cause side effects and have been on quite a few in the past year and a half). I recently increased the Prozac to 10 mg. (I have VERY low tolerance to meds, so 10 mg. is actually a high dose for me).

Could the Prozac be causing these PPD/anxiety symptoms?? I thought it would make them better.

Also, do people have PPD "relapses" after a certain amount of time?

Also, it is PMS time for me, when everything gets worse, but I haven't had these high-anxiety symptoms for almost a year now.

I'm confused and scared! The Prozac seemed to be helping with my fatigue, but this anxiety is horrible.
I am also taking 200mg. Wellbutrin, and I have been taking some Klonapin during PMS, which helps a little. I have been on Wellburtin consistently since my daughter was born, so I know it's not the problem.

I'm wondering if more Prozac is needed, or if I need to get off of it immediately -- or do I add something like Zyprexa? In the beginning of my PPD, my doc put me on that, but I only stayed on it for a few days because of a lot of agitation and disorientation.

Please, all help is greatly appreciated and needed!

Thank you!
cindy
