I've wondered about adding a longer term anti-anxiety med to my wellbutrin other than ativan. I would love to hear about your experience with imipramine, of which I know zero. *s* Thanks. -Terra.

Terra, it's a little hard for me to tell how well the imipramine is working. My psychiatrist recommended it after I told him that I was having general anxiety to the point that I was heading toward being afraid of going anywhere. I started on it and within a week of being on the max dose he had prescribed for me I was feeling pretty good. When I saw him again he told me that it was unusual that I was doing well since that dose (75mg) is not generally considered to be therapeutic. After hearing that I went downhill because it was the placebo effect (or so I thought - he called me with the results of my blood test for imipramine level, which showed that it was so high that it was almost toxic). Since then I've had a bit of a roller coaster ride, especially since starting therapy in February. The good thing is that for the past 5 weeks or so, I've been doing really well. When I see my psychiatrist for a med check next month, I might ask him about going off imipramine. Then again, if things are going well I shouldn't mess with that. I have Ativan to use if I really need it, but I haven't used any in the past 4 months. Imipramine can be toxic to the heart if the dose is too high, so that's why blood levels need to be monitered.
